Background of the Study:
Widowhood rites among rural women in Afikpo North Local Government are deeply embedded in cultural traditions, serving as structured processes for reintegrating widows into community life. These rites, involving ceremonial practices and communal support, have long provided social and psychological healing following the loss of a spouse (Ifeanyi, 2023). Despite modern influences and evolving gender norms, these rites persist as vital markers of cultural identity and continuity (Chidera, 2024). However, debates continue regarding their relevance and impact on women’s autonomy. This study investigates the factors that sustain the practice of widowhood rites, examining their socio-cultural, economic, and gender-related dimensions, and assesses their implications in a modernizing society (Nkem, 2025).
Statement of the Problem:
Modern perspectives on gender rights increasingly challenge the persistence of widowhood rites in Afikpo North. While these rites are integral to cultural identity, they are criticized for perpetuating gender inequalities and limiting widows’ autonomy (Chidera, 2024). This study examines why these rites persist and how they impact rural women’s lives, highlighting the tension between cultural preservation and modern gender advocacy (Ifeanyi, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To examine the persistence of widowhood rites among rural women.
To assess the socio-cultural factors influencing these rites.
To recommend measures that balance cultural identity with women’s rights.
Research Questions:
What factors contribute to the persistence of widowhood rites in Afikpo North?
How do these rites impact the lives of rural widows?
What strategies can reconcile traditional practices with modern gender rights?
Research Hypotheses:
Cultural heritage significantly influences the persistence of widowhood rites.
Widowhood rites measurably affect the socio-economic status of widows.
Community education can balance traditional practices with modern gender rights.
Significance of the Study:
This study addresses the delicate balance between preserving cultural traditions and advancing gender rights. Its insights will guide culturally sensitive policies that respect tradition while promoting women’s empowerment (Ifeanyi, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to rural women in Afikpo North Local Government, Ebonyi State, focusing exclusively on the persistence of widowhood rites. Limitations include reliance on self-reported data and cultural sensitivities.
Definitions of Terms:
